Joe Schifferdecker is a Boston-based photographer and filmmaker working across commercial campaigns, documentary-style storytelling, and fine art photography. His work is rooted in a curiosity for people, places, and experiences — a curiosity that has shaped both the work he creates and the places photography has taken him.
What began as a way to document the places he explored gradually became a way of seeing them differently. That same curiosity now carries into every project, whether creating a campaign for a brand, documenting people in their element, or spending days in the field chasing a single photograph. Across both commercial and personal work, Joe is drawn to imagery that feels intentional, cinematic, and grounded in something real.
Photography has always been my way of exploring the world. Whether I'm hiking into remote landscapes, documenting a place from the air, or producing commercial work for a client, I'm drawn to moments that feel genuine and memorable.
Today I split my time between fine art landscape photography and commercial productions, creating photo and video campaigns for brands, businesses and athletes. No matter the project, my goal is the same: create work that people remember long after they've seen it.
Travel has shaped the way I see the world. Some of my favorite images have come from camping in the Utah desert, hiking through Iceland, waiting for the perfect light in the mountains, or returning to places simply because I know they'll look different the next time.
Those experiences influence every project I take on. I believe the strongest photographs aren't just technically good—they make you feel like you were there.
Photography has given me a reason to go places I might never have gone, pay attention to moments I might have otherwise missed, and experience the world with more intention. Some of my favorite memories have come from chasing an image—waking up before sunrise, hiking somewhere unfamiliar, or waiting for a moment that may only last a few seconds.
That feeling is what keeps me creating. Whether the work is for a client or simply for myself, I want to make something that carries a piece of that experience with it.
